Travel Newfoundland: St. Johns, Newfoundland

We acknowledged another point on which we were told Quidi Vidi Lake, on the eastern edge of the city. Many homes Race trailers parked here next week in anticipation of the lake. Every day two oars man, s 4 +1 and 6 +1 s were practicing for the upcoming contest weeks. A walking trail winds around the lake and is a popular place for locals. San Juan is known for its network of hiking trails. Since the track four other Quidi Vidi ramify in the rest of the city.

We took a walking tour of the eastern part of the city. This is where many of the wealthy built their homes after many fires in the 19th century, which leveled the bottom of the dock of the city. Many of the houses are in the Queen Anne and late Empire style, with later Victorian thrown in for good measure.

The tour took us to the Colonial House, which held the legislature and the Supreme Court to the country of Newfoundland 1850-1959. They moved to the building Confederate below. The building now houses the Provincial Archives.

We crossed the street and were invited to attend a garden party house Government, the home of Lieutenant Governor of the Province. We were the Illinois delegation estimates. The Royal Regiment of Foot and the 27th Battalion Royal Society-second Artillery Regiment were present in the style. The drum and fife body was increased by the provincial real military band which played during the party. The tea, lemonade and cookies were served to all the guests.

Led to Signal Hill, overlooking the harbor and the sea. We analyzed The sample in the center of interpretation, which traced the history of the area since before John Cabot through the battle of the Somme on July 1, 1917, which lost nearly an entire generation of young Newfoundlanders in a day.

At 11:00 was the tattoo, a 1795 recreation of traditional military activities carried out by the Royal Newfoundland Regiment of Foot and the Company 27-2 Battalion Royal Regiment of Artillery. Consisting of students from the preparatory body consists of drum and fife band, and the Regiment of Foot Artillery Regiment. Demonstrate the purpose of marching exercises that were used in actual combat, shooting of muskets from different formations, and the use of the howitzer and a gun in battle. The exercise was very informative and entertaining.

Speaking to the historian of the group after the performance asked about the Germans and the Second World War. He said it was a possibility. Many ships were sunk in the North Atlantic and bodies were washed ashore along the coast. Among the bodies, or parts thereof, would have been a number of German sailors. Because their identities were unknown citizens who carry out services and give them a Christian burial. This is definitely a plausible explanation and remains a wonderful example of Newfoundland hospitality.

At 2:00 we were scheduled for a tour of Signal Hill. So we went to the GeoCenter Johnson, just down the hill. Built on the hill, exhibitions are revealing the real rock underground of Signal Hill. Some of the oldest rocks in the world have been found in Labrador. A practical exposure on a rock almost 4 billion years ago. We had to leave early because our date tour, but returned later to complete the work exposed.

The Signal Hill, we Billy, our tour guide ranger. Only two of us were on the tour, although many others were on the hill too. He showed us around the hill for over an hour and a half. Signal Hill was used for many purposes, barracks, hospital, prison, etc. Its main use was for signaling of ships coming into port. The signal was transmitted from Cape Spear, the easternmost point of North America, by raising the ship colors. This was observed after by traders and townspeople preparing for the ship. In 1901, Marconi sent and received the first transatlantic wireless signal from Europe, a series of three points. He used an antenna attached to a kite. Cable companies also were not happy with his achievement, because he had left only cable Transatlantic at great cost. How did twenty years after it was revealed, bouncing signals off the ionosphere. This forever changed communication and helped to maritime.

Queen Victoria laid the foundation stone of the Cabot Tower in 1897, the 400th anniversary of its discovery. An interesting fact is the Basilica of San Juan Bautista line with the close towers, the entrance to the port of San Juan. By coating the mast to a number of lamps in the tower ships were able to sail through the Strait without incident. This was done until recently, when the Strait is dredged to provide access. During the Second World War a large network is hung across the straits from Fort Amherst to Signal Hill to keep out German submarines and protect shipping from San Juan. The Germans, without however, retained many ship captains who sailed from Bell Island, a short distance. They were familiar with the waters and the dangers in the area. So were able to avoid the network.

Do some laundry needed on Merry Street and today's meeting other tasks. Happy Meeting Street is so named because it is at the top of the hill overlooking the harbor. People meet there to chat and watch the boats entering the port.

We are set to stay at Quidi Vidi Lake until next Thursday and see the oldest sporting events in North America, the 185th consecutive San Juan Royal Regatta. From dawn to dusk, the teams have been practicing. We are looking forward to the race.

At night, we went to Bannerman, which took place from the people of the St. John's Festival, which began today and runs throughout the weekend. Also on tap this weekend is the Festival de la Calle George, which runs through Tuesday evening. The groups here are more of a rock rhythm.

Hello again to the third set.

On Saturday, August 2, 2003 we took a walk through the old town of San Juan's most original buildings have been destroyed by massive fires in 1846 and 1892. The streets rise from port through a steep hill, typical of most port cities. At the top of the hill is Merry Meeting Street, where youths congregated and yet keep a look out for any ships entering the port. Two of the many boats moored in the port today were a French ship luxury cruise a passenger list of only ninety people, whose itinerary was the Arctic Circle and natural sites there. The other was a Russian fishing vessel in port for repairs engine. They have been there over a month. Knowing how much I respect the population foreign factory ships to destroy the Grand Banks fishing, the boat could be there for many months. The crew did not seem too upset, sunbathing on deck.

He walked down George Street, home of the Festival Music of George Street. The street is a paradise for a tracker bar. Almost all properties in the street is a pub, many with Celtic names. The food is also available, but nothing else except on the night of entertainment. He entered the Anglican church, the exterior survive fire, but the interior is gutted. Its small museum artifacts from the fire, church keys bent, charred beams and a mummified rat (actually a rat). The services are of the variety of the High Church, held morning prayers before the Eucharist and Vespers (evening prayer) a day and solemn Vespers on Sunday. They have a picture in the museum of the crew who worked on the repairs the Cathedral. One man was killed during the project. Mysteriously appears as a transparent person photo. You can see the rest of the background through it: a ghostly specter. More than 50 members of the Cathedral community who died in World Wars are also honored with a plaque near the altar.

He drove through the Gardens English to Bowring Park. A wedding was in the process of that day. The park has statues, including a replica of Peter Pan and one dedicated to the Fighting Man Newfoundland. Cascades process of liquidation and that a focal point for the bucolic community.

After the nap we met our friends Andrew and Pamela and went the George Street Festival. Most bands are run of the mill. The headliners were high Holy Days of Thunder Bay, ON and Mother Earth, a local group making his name nationally. The crowd disperses until Mother Earth appeared on stage. From all directions people entered the plaza, at least five thousand men. The singer was in San Juan and was coming home for the local hero. The heavy rock music was accompanied by a light show. The crowd was really into music, with mosh pit. The singer even went into the pit of one of his songs and was raised on high. He was not in fear of injury, because these were his friends.

After the concert, about 11:00 of 5.00, more crowded in the many pubs along the street. The party continued. The festival will continue for three nights. We intend to be there Tuesday night for the kitchen party.

Had ice cream at the famous Moo Moos.

We treat the famous Ches Fi And Chi (fish and chips). The were good but not as good as the Fisherman's Cafe Friendly's in Rose Blanche. (Fortunately not as abundant or a portion.)

We visited the brewery Quidi Vidi. A tour had just left. We have some gift tags for our master brewer of their products. At Christmas there is a Mummers Ale, which put the orange peel, cloves and other spices in the mash, giving it a special flavor. A mask is a British tradition during the twelve days of Christmas, where people dress up and are masked. Go from house to house to fill their jugs of beer after entertaining the hosts and try to guess its identity in Philadelphia, PA pampering parade is an annual News Year's Day.

In the longer the battery Quidi Vidi, built by the French when they attacked San Juan during the Seven Days War. It is very small, but adequately protects the cove Quidi Vidi an attack of the sea.

We walked the path of the river in Virginia, two miles in each direction. The trail along the river in Virginia, and that cascades down the hill on which Fort Pepperrell, Built in the Second World War for Americans. Now called Pleasantville. A Texan designed the fort and left its mark: the streets are the shape of a hat ten-gallon and have names like Churchill and Roosevelt.

We went to George Street. This night is going to get screamed, Newfoundland ie.become fee. Screech is what one does after drinking the last drop of dark molasses rum in the old days. After a month here, we feel the blood coursing through island our veins. The Museum Pub Trapper John and we were properly screamed chirp drank (Newfoundland rum straight, kissed the puffin, or cod, and repeated the promise.

Now we can enjoy the cuisine of the Parties. A kitchen party is a tradition of Newfoundland where anything goes, as in the kitchen at home. Tonight was Newfoundland Celtic and night. Some of the groups were Banshee, six policemen and Celtic Royal Newfoundland, where the men wore kilts and the musician girl wearing pants. She really began to enter the music through half the set. Then came the Mariners, who had heard earlier. The headliners were Shanneyganock that the audience went wild with their Newfoundland and Celtic music and lively rhythms of the fiddler, drummer, bass and rhythm guitars, squeeze box player. More people were in the kitchen party than in the concert on Saturday.

Today is a beautiful sunny day for the operation Sailing the 185th consecutive San Juan. This is the only major festival held between a prison and a cemetery. The shells, or boats, are the ancient British fixed seat, unlike the Olympics where you put the shells with the legs moving. There are twenty qualifying races, the men's rowing 2.450 kilometer course, turning around a buoy and then back to the finish line. Most do so in less than ten minutes. Women carry half the course and in less than six minutes. OZFM This year, a local radio station crew regained women. They set a new record of less than 5:00 minutes. Newfoundland Power won the men's competition.

Competition is not just about racing. It is a festival. At least 50,000 people gathered around the lagoon, visiting the concession stands, the way you eat on the road and waiting for children to play in the different attractions. The atmosphere was one of joy. Bands played, the crowds were standing or sitting on the benches cheering their favorite teams, festivals were attended by staff dinner. A template is like a dinner of New England dinner grill. It consists of salt pork and various vegetables are thrown into the pot, making a good stew.

I woke up this morning and most of the parking lot was cleared, a view different from yesterday. We're going to go well, having enjoyed our stay in San Juan. Are we aa change? The answer is "yes," some day, and this time in less than 40 years.

About the Author

John and Maggie Pelley are Geriatric Gypsies. Both of us are retired from the rat race of working. We are full-time RVers, who ran away from home. We began our travels on the East Coast and, like the migrating birds, seek the warmth of the seasons. No more shoveling snow in Chicago. We have discovered volunteering with the National Park System. During our travels we have found that each town has a story to tell: some are more interesting than others. Both of us enjoy good listening music as we go. John has a CD he has recorded of Native American flure music. We have learned that RVing has a learning curve. We want to pass on some advice the help others avoid this trecherous curve. Life is an adventure. We are living it to the utmost.
